From Adam:
I'd add that phone screens give you a chance to communicate in a
different medium than in-person, one which is increasingly important
as product development becomes more distributed [around the world]. (It would be
wonderful to somehow add IM and email to the interview process)
Trick questions are nonsense. In his example, his question would
reflect badly on the company and disrupt the flow of the interview. The
more classic "trick" questions are bad-- even the most creative or
experienced people sometimes miss obscure insights. Shame on
people who ask about the three lightbulbs. Make sure you ask
questions where you can give hints without ruining the question.
Even genii get stuck sometimes, and need a little help.
